MP3: Ducktails - "Art Vandelay"

"Everybody Knows"
Everybody knows... this song to be a Real Estate song. Well, you do if you've seen them perform it regularly in their sets from the last year or so. But it's a Ducktails jam, actually! Although this recorded version is decidedly more bedroom-y (a la old Ducktails one-man-band style), "Art Vandelay" definitely feels like a Mondanile-penned Real Estate song. (Though it should be noted it is not new or uncommon for them to play Matt Mondanile's solo project Ducktails' songs.) It's the one we'd leave their shows singing, Everybody knowwws, somethin somethin somethinnn...

Ducktails - "Art Vandelay"

And we still can not get it out of our heads. Seriously, it's been months.

PHOTOS: MICRO-PIXEL-RITES' Pre-SXSW Pump-Up Party, 03/06

Keepin' It in the Fam
Picture if you will, an industrial wasteland, devoid of all forms of life but filled with the remnants of desecration and destruction. Cigarettes lay smoldering in puddles of urine and beer. Lining the halls are what appear to be balls of feces carefully rolled by human-size dung beetles, but are really (miraculously) fully intact falafel balls. PBR cans lie shredded to pieces, still spurting and spewing and shaking about in restless disillusion.

This is what my building looks like after the MICRO-PIXEL-RITES party Saturday night where Real Estate, Family Portrait, and Alex Bleeker and the Freaks played the most wonderful, kick-ass weed party house show ever to live and die in Brooklyn. The evening included fantastic sets by the above bands, tunes by DJ Jon Williams, projections of Wong Kar-Wai flicks and Seinfeld eps, and a shit ton of weed, ecstasy, keg beer, whiskey, hookers, midget acrobats...

Despite most of the show info being tweeted that day with the wrong address by multiple people, we still had to turn people away at the door. We do apologize for this. Even though you may hate us now, please know that we love you anyway.

My personal highlight of the night was not when the cops came, nor was it my Oscar-worthy apology performance to my batshit crazy bitch of a neighbor which involved me crying on cue. Nor was it when Hunter and the bros from Twin Sister (love these guys!) showed up to finish off the keg, because I pretty much blacked out by then. No, my favorite part of the night came after I, in a seeeriously drunken state of excitement, ran to ask each RE bro to sing Happy B-day to our bud Emilie (of Visitation Rites, who turned 25 at midnight!) my co-host and fave lady. And they obliged, along with the entire crowd who turned around to sing to her, before diving into "Snow Days," our current fave Real Estate live jam. Needless to say, they were fucking great. Pretty rad b-day moment, if you ask me.

Who cares if the building wants to see me evicted and hung by my neck from the tracks of the JMZ?? While the PIXELHORSE Headquarters at 59 Jefferson may be closed to more shows for a while, this is definitely not the last party to come from us. Oh what's that?? You've HEARD of our incredibly exciting unofficial SXSW backyard showcase? Of course you have! Because, like your momma says, you are SOMEBODY!

I'll see y'all fuckers in Austin!

P.S. - Congrats to Real Estate on their new music video (their first), directed by Rich Law, which premiered today. The next one is in the works already, and it sounds awesome...

New Real Estate Reality track reviews!

By now you've probably got your Real Estate full-length vinyl spinnin' and are already stoked on the fact that Real Estate's EP Reality is coming out 12/18 via Mexican Summer. Now you have even more to revv your RE engine.

New tracks "Dumb Luck" and "Younger Than Yesterday" were posted today via Stereogum and Pfork.

Here's a re-post of the vid of "Younger Than Yesterday" from the CMJ showcase at the Delancey:

VIDEO: Real Estate - "Younger Than Yesterday"

A newer track "Younger Than Yesterday" by NJ jammers Real Estate, performed at the Underwater Peoples/Chocolate Bobka/twosyllable CMJ showcase at the Delancey on 10/23/09. With their first full-length barely released yet (11/17 via Woodsist but currently available for purchase at their shows), Real Estate has already got fans salivating with news of an upcoming EP Reality from Mexican Summer by the end of the year. With tracks like "Basement" (see Ray's vid) and the one above, a taste of Real Estate's reality is something we could all dig on. Like most, we cannot wait for the EP and have been devouring new songs with the ferocious appetite of a breast-feeding lioness. These boys can barely crank them out fast enough!

Check out more sweet CMJ vids by Ray Concepcion/Fury, Chocolate Bobka's c. axel, and yourrrs truly PIXELHORSE, at the Chocolate Bobka Takes on CMJ Channel.

VIDEO: Real Estate - "Atlantic City"

So apparently we at PIXELHORSE have decided to become an all-Real-Estate-all-of-the-time blog. (Who has the time or patience for other bands really anyhow?? They're always doing silly shit.)

This is Real Estate performing their jammiest jam "Atlantic City." This stellar newer version of the song appears on the new full-length (!) which you can buy at their shows right now. "AC" is the kinda jam that flows through yer headphones like liquid happy and makes you unabashedly dance down the street in a state of total elation.

Shot this on standard for no apparent reason. (But Charles over at Bobka has some really top-notch stuff, so be on the lookout.) Oops. M'eh, was a looong (and totally fun) night. A night that involved some frat bros from Long Island pouring a drink down my back, dudes dressed like furries, and losing some of my footage... CMJ I love you but you're hurting me. Aren't we over yet??

This is bittersweet for us. P-horse contributor BUNNY recently relocated to Austin and has been waiting for these guys to come out and see her. But Brooklyn and Jersey will surely feel a good bit colder without em.

VIDEO: Alex Bleeker and the Freaks -"Animal Tracks" @ Union Pool

More goodies from that maaagical night at Union Pool. Man, never thought I'd see those terms all in the same sentence. At least not since that one summer night when I witnessed a group of kids shotgunning PBR's, making out, and vomiting all over the backyard fountain. Oh, Union Pool, how we love to hate thee.

Er, anyway. Here's Bleek and the Freaks makin' magic, makin' magic magic. Watch the Freaks cover "Animal Tracks" by the lovely women of Mountain Man. Martin Courtney from Real Estate is chillin on bass, Alex "the Gator" Steinberg on guitar. See Matt Mondanile (Ducktails, Real Estate) frrreak on drums. In the farers he reminds us of Guy "Shades" Patterson. (It's pronounced "oh-need-ers" remember?) And of course, feast yer eyes on Bleek-the-Freak Bleekalicious Bleekditty himself.

Woo... is it hot in here or is it just us?

Mmmm. Smell that? CMJ is in the air!

Real Estate's LP comes out 11/17/09 on Woodsist.

Track list:
1. Beach Comber
2. Pool Swimmers
3. Suburban Dogs
4. Black Lake
5. Atlantic City
6. Fake Blues
7. Green River
8. Suburban Beverage
9. Lets Rock The Beach
10. Snow Days

What happened to "Basement?" While most of us have already been lovin these tracks for a while already, it's still a highly anticipated release. It means we get a super sweet slew of tour dates. It features newly mastered versions of popular faves "Fake Blues" (demo version but on 4 track) "Beach Comber," and a stellar new version of "Atlantic City"(a personal fave) that is slowed-down and tripped-out, and streamable via their MySpace.

VIDEO: Alex Bleeker and the Freakshow @ Glasslands Gallery 09/14/09

Alex Bleeker and the Freaks (Nate "Skippy" Luce) played with Invisible Hand this past Sunday at Glasslands Gallery. Their super chillers set had us feeling like we were sitting around with buds at a campfire, praying the summer never ends. Watch Bleeker channel Jerry and Neil simultaneously, and feel the warmth in the vids that follow. Maybe you'll get that Indian summer you're wishin' for.

"King of the Mountain." Never goin' back to school."Never Goin' Back to School." Bennington love makes me sad sometimes. Bleek's got that nostalgia thing on lock.

"Beneath the Weeping Willow Tree" is a modified Liam the Younger cover. Jersey love for the Underwater Peeps bros.

This is a sad song called "Common Sense."

Watch out for the Freaks album due out in a few weeks on Underwater Peeps, and maybe if you're good, a preview track before then.

And catch Bleeker shredding bass in Real Estate at one of their 10 tour dates Girls later this fall, which he just informed me will include a show in Canada. International, bro, it's hapnun'.

VIDEO: Insound 10th Anniversary Party - These Are Powers and Suckers 08/27/09

Duuude this party was totes sweet. I saw Mischa Barton (she said rehab was fab, btw, and she did NOT look fat...) AND the dudes from Real Estate! The bassist - you know, that dude from Alex Bleeker and the Freaks - tooootally signed my boob, after some serious convincing. I'm serial. For cereals. THEN I bowled a 320. Rage!
So, I was too busy bowling and missed Real Estate's set, (FUCK!), but I guess it's cool cos I gots these:
